Math for Grade 2

The Grade 2 math curriculum at Kids Academy Classroomarrow-up-right builds on foundational skills with more complex ideas in algebraic operations, measurement, data, and geometry. It combines lessons, worksheets, games, videos, and quizzes designed to develop confident problem solvers ready for higher-level math.

Core lesson areas:

Foundations and Applications in Measuring, Time and Data

  • Measuring, Estimating and Time: Practice measuring the length of objects in standard units, making simple length estimates, and telling time to 10 and 5 minute marks.

  • Keeping Track of Data: Collect information and display it using bar graphs, picture graphs and line plots.

Geometry

  • Shapes and Their Characteristics: Name shapes and describe them in terms of sides, corners, faces and vertices.

  • Fractions and Shapes: Explore equal parts, like halves and fourths, of familiar shapes.

Foundations in Operations Within 1,000

  • Place Value: Students recap their understanding of ones and tens and advance your knowledge of how numbers are formed into the value of hundreds.

  • Counting and Comparing: Count within 1,000 and compare numbers using place value.

  • Addition and Subtraction within 100: Add and subtract two digit numbers with and without regrouping and borrowing.

  • Addition and Subtraction within 1,000: Solve addition and subtraction problems with three-digit numbers with regrouping and borrowing.

Applications in operations within 100

  • Word Problems Sums and Differences within 100: Solve real life story problems using addition and subtraction within 100.

  • Thinking Deeper about Addition and Subtraction: The Unknown Number: Find missing numbers in equations and story problems.

  • Equal Groups: Use equal groups to build early understanding of multiplication.

Worksheets focus on:

  • Number sense (up to 1000)

  • Place value and number comparison exercises up to 1000

  • Skip counting to prepare for multiplication

  • Addition and subtraction equations and word problems

  • Measurement practice, graph reading, and time telling

  • Arrays as an introduction to multiplication concepts

  • Geometry activities focusing on 2D and 3D shapes and fractions of shapes

  • Money word problems

  • Word problems covering addition, subtraction, two-step problems, graphs, and money

Learning games and educational videos:

  • Support interactive practice on mathematical operations, measurement, and reasoning skills

  • Help develop logic and math thinking abilities with engaging multimedia content

Quizzes assess all of the above mentioned topics, including:

  • Skills in measuring, estimating, and data handling

  • Understanding attributes of shapes and fractions of shapes

  • Place value knowledge and counting/comparing within 1,000

  • Addition and subtraction within 100 and 1,000

  • Solving word problems by calculating sums, differences, finding unknown numbers, and analyzing arrays.
