Reading for Grade 2

Our Grade 2 reading activities on Kids Academy Classroom are designed to help children strengthen their fluency, comprehension, and phonics skills while learning to decode more complex words and understand different types of texts.

Core areas covered:

Accuracy and fluency

• Decode multi-syllable words

• Segment words into syllables

• Read with accuracy and fluency to support comprehension

• Use context to self-correct word recognition and understanding

• Learn and spell frequently used sight words

• Correctly use homophones and antonyms

Decoding words

• Divide words into syllables

• Decode two-syllable words

• Identify and understand the meaning of common prefixes and suffixes

• Read irregular past tense verbs

• Read words that follow standard spelling rules

Early phonics and phonological awareness

• Practice rhyming words

Phonics

• Determine the meaning of words with common prefixes and suffixes

• Distinguish between long and short vowels

• Learn vowel spelling patterns (ee, ea, ai, oa, ow, aw, au, igh, oi, oy, ou, oo, ea, ie, ough)

• Practice digraphs (-th voiced, -ch)

Comprehension

• Literature: answer who, what, where, when, why questions

• Recount folktales and stories

• Identify characters’ feelings and points of view

• Understand story structure and key details

• Summarize texts

• Informational texts: understand main idea, sequence of events, cause and effect

• Use text features to gain understanding

• Identify author’s purpose and support for specific points

• Distinguish information from pictures versus words

• Other genres: historical topics, poetry, science topics
