Reading for Grade 2

Our Grade 2 reading activities on Kids Academy Classroom are designed to help children strengthen their fluency, comprehension, and phonics skills while learning to decode more complex words and understand different types of texts.

Core areas covered:

Phonics

• Distinguish between words with long and short vowels

• Learn the sounds of vowel digraphs, vowel pairs and vowel-consonant groups

• Practice OW and OU diphthongs

Accuracy and fluency

• Segment words into syllables

• Read with accuracy and fluency to support comprehension

• Use context to self-correct word recognition and understanding

• Read and spell frequently used sight words

• Identify the meaning of common suffixes and prefixes

• Decode the meaning of words with suffixes and prefixes

• Irregular past tense verbs

Comprehension

• Literature: answer who, what, where, when, why questions

• Recount folktales and stories

• Identify characters’ feelings and points of view

• Understand story structure and key details

• Summarize texts

• Informational texts: understand main idea, sequence of events, cause and effect

• Identify author’s purpose and support for specific points

• Distinguish information from pictures versus words

• Other genres: historical topics, poetry, science topics
