Reading for Grade 3

Our Grade 3 reading activities on Kids Academy Classroom are designed to help learners read with fluency, decode multi-syllable words, and understand more complex texts. Children explore diverse genres, strengthen comprehension strategies, and apply phonics and vocabulary skills to gain meaning from what they read.

Core areas covered:

Accuracy and fluency

  • Decode multi-syllable words

  • Identify the sound of different syllables

  • Read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words

  • Use Greek and Latin roots to determine word meanings

  • Correctly use homophones and antonyms

  • Read with fluency and accuracy

  • Choose the correct words to complete sentences

Decoding words

  • Divide words into syllables

  • Decode two-syllable and multi-syllable words

  • Identify common prefixes and suffixes

  • Read irregular past tense verbs

Phonics

  • Identify and determine meanings of prefixes, suffixes, and base words

  • Read words with silent letters (h, k, w, b)

  • Distinguish between long and short vowels

  • Learn vowel spelling patterns (ai, oa, ow, aw, au, igh, oy, oi)

  • Practice digraphs (-th voiced)

Comprehension

  • Literature: recount folktales, explore themes, character traits, narrator and point of view, summarize, and identify key details

  • Informational texts: understand main idea, sequence of events, cause and effect, gain information from text features, compare texts

  • Other genres: identify genres, explore poetry, Greek mythology, science, and historical topics

Learning formats
