Reading for Grade 1

Our Grade 1 Reading activities on Kids Academy Classroom are designed to strengthen foundational literacy skills, building fluency, phonics knowledge, and comprehension in an engaging way.

Core areas covered:

Phonics and phonological awareness

• Distinguishing between long and short vowel sounds

• Identifying beginning, middle and ending sounds

• Segmenting words into phonemes

• Identifying rhyming words

Phonics

• Learn vowel spelling patterns (ai, oa, ow, aw, au, igh, ee, ea, ie, silent e)

• Learn the most common digraphs (-th, -wh, -sh, -ch)

• Divide words into syllables

• Read and choose correct inflectional endings (ing, ed)

Print concepts

• Use capital letters at the beginning of a sentence

• Use punctuation at the end of a sentence

• Choose correct end punctuation: question, full stop, exclamation mark.

• Read words in order with accuracy

Accuracy and fluency

• Read and spell common sight words

• Read regularly and irregularly spelled words

• Complete sentences using correct words

• Match pictures with words

• Read words following spelling rules

• Understand contractions

Comprehension

• Identify key details, summarize texts, and determine the central message

• Describe characters, settings, and major events

• Recognize words suggesting feelings or sensory details

• Understand cause and effect in informational texts

• Determine meaning of unknown words using context and sentence clues

• Distinguish information from illustrations vs. text

• Recognize genres: realistic fiction, fantasy, informational texts, and poetry
