English for Grade 2

Kids Academy Classroom’s Grade 2 English curriculum builds on foundational literacy skills to help students become fluent readers, confident writers, and effective communicators. Through lessons, worksheets, games, videos, drills, and quizzes, children explore phonics, spelling, grammar, literature, vocabulary, and informational texts in engaging, age-appropriate ways.

Early literacy skills

• Mastery of the alphabet, including upper- and lowercase letters and the letters in students’ own names.

• Phonological awareness activities, including recognizing rhymes and blending/segmenting sounds in words.

Foundational reading skills

• Phonics and word recognition, with practice on prefixes, suffixes, vowel teams, digraphs, silent e, one- and two-syllable words, and multi-syllable words.

• Spelling instruction, including pattern recognition, irregular spellings, and high-frequency sight words.

• Distinguishing long and short vowel sounds and consonant blends.

Reading literature

• Identifying characters, settings, key details, lessons, rhythm, and point of view in stories, poems, and fables.

• Summarizing texts, making connections between illustrations and text, and comparing and contrasting characters and events.

Vocabulary development

• Determining the meaning of unknown words using context clues, prefixes, suffixes, root words, and compound words.

Reading informational texts

• Identifying key details, author’s purpose, text features, and connections within a text.

• Using illustrations and comparing texts on the same topic.

• Exploring biography, history, science, and paired texts.

Phonics and word study

• Mastery of vowel spelling patterns, digraphs, diphthongs, and the multiple sounds of letters/groups (e.g., OO, EA, IE, OUGH).

• Working with long and short vowels, silent e, and vowel teams.

• Segmenting and blending words, dividing words into syllables, and applying inflectional endings (–ed, –ing).

Writing conventions

• Grammar instruction covering adjectives, adverbs, irregular past tense verbs, simple and compound sentences, nouns, pronouns, and verb tenses.

• Capitalization and punctuation, including titles, dates, holidays, product and geographic names, and apostrophes in contractions/possessives.
